MOKORO TRAILS

AN INTRODUCTION

The Mokoro Trails activity forms part of the Community Based Tourism Policy promoted by the Botswana Government in
order to encourage rural communities to generate work and income from the resources of the rural areas in which they live,
namely the wildlife and wilderness.
The communities of the area where the Mokoro Trails are undertaken are represented by the Okavango Kopano Mokoro
Community Trust (OKMCT ), the board of which is made up from members of the various communities within the area.

The OKMCT manages the Mokoro Trails undertaken in their concession area, this being in line with the Botswana
Government’s policy of restructuring the tourism industry to ensure that tourism generated income benefits the actual
rural communities of the areas where the tourist activities are undertaken.

The OKMCT is totally autonomous in the management of the Mokoro Trails activities.

The Mokoro Trails provide a livelihood for the Mokoro owners and polers, with the OKMCT ensuring that the demand
for Mokoro Trails is fairly and evenly distributed.

For the OKMCT to be able to effectively manage the Mokoro Trails , certain locally based safari operators have been
given the right, by the OKMCT, to enter the concession area with tourists wanting to experience the Mokoro Trails.

Basically, the safari operators provide only transport to the Mokoro Poling Stations within the concession area and the
OKMCT organizes the actual Mokoro Trails.

The Guide Polers and Polers daily fees and the entrance fees into the concession area are determined and fixed by
 the OKMCT.

AFRO TREK , as one of the operators offering the Mokoro Trails are committed to the promotion of the
MOKORO TRAIL EXPERIENCE for the OKMCT by offering the most competitive prices by keeping our transport
 rates to the minimum.

There are several Mokoro Poling Stations in the concession area from where the Mokoro Trails commence.

We use the poling stations at Boro and Ditshipi depending on the water levels in the Okavango Delta.
